Sponsor: A Girl Who Reads

I love my sponsors! I love even more when they’re a kindred spirit.
A Girl Who Reads is a blog about one of my favorite things, BOOKS!

“Welcome to A Girl Who Reads, a place that we hope will become a home for every woman who loves a good book. There is a simple joy in picking up a book, to dive into a whole new world without leaving your home. Here I will write book reviews, share book news, ponder literature and generally just want to talk about reading with you. I would love it if you grabbed yourself a cuppa and explored.
An important note, here we do not care how you read your books. We’ve heard the paperback v. eReader arguments but this is a safe space where we do not judge people for how they choose to read their books (as long as they read them). A Girl Who Reads has more paperbacks than space to store them but also loads of books on our Kindle’s. So lets say no more about it.” — About A Girl Who Reads

I love that there are people in this world that love books as much as I do. People who want to share books and enjoy discussing literature with people — no matter the format that they read in! I am partial to paperbacks but I love how easy it is to have my books on my tablet with me at all times!

She writes great reviews and she does something that I really love. When she reviews it she tells you whether or not she recommends it for various groups of people… and TELLS YOU WHY! So for example, she reviewed Seven Letters From Paris. Would she Recommend it for a book club? “As a book no, this doesn’t have the deeper content for a book club. That said I enjoyed that all of the seven letters that the book are named after aren’t all given to you at the very start but spaced throughout – that stylistic choice would be interesting to talk to a book club about.” I love that.

Alys has written some GREAT Gift Guides that I wanted to share with you guys as well.

This one made me happy – I’m always looking for new children’s books!

My Favorite Warm Holiday Drink Recipes

I love warm Holiday drinks. It’s nice to curl up with a book and sip on something warm!  I thought I’d share a couple of my favorites with you guys.

If you’re lucky enough to have family that just came from Germany, you can get Gluhwein in a bottle and all you have to do is heat it up. If not, I have a recipe for you! Also, those mugs are from the holiday markets in Germany. They’re super cute!

Crock Pot Hot Apple Cider

  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1-2 oranges sliced

Place spices in a spice bag. Combine all ingredients in crock pot and stir until brown sugar is dissolved. Cook on low for 1.5 – 2 hours.  Enjoy!

Gluhwein (German Hot Mulled Wine)
The beauty of Gluhwein is that you can tailor it to your taste. The amount of sugar you add is proportional to the quality of wine. The worse the wine, the more sugar you’re going to add. I start with about 1/2 to 1 cup of sugar and go from there. Some people use lemons instead of oranges. Some people like cardamom and some people like to add star anise. It’s all delicious and I usually go off of what I have in my house at the time.

  •  1 bottle dry red wine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 sliced orange

Combine all ingredients in medium saucepan and cook over medium low heat until hot. Be careful to not let it boil! Drink and Enjoy!

Also, I love when Chanel lets me take pictures of her. She’s the prettiest girl.
Do you have a favorite holiday drink? Let me know in the comments!

Sponsor: Even Glow Serum Review

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some different skin care companies. This one is probably one of my favorites.Valentia (named after the Roman Goddess of healing!) is a company that uses natural ingredients that are free of toxins and paraban-free.

What this product does:

Vanquish dark spots and skin discoloration, replacing uneven and ill-textured skin with smooth, wrinkle-free skin that leaves you looking flawless and ageless.

Revitalize your skin with essential fatty acids that leave skin smooth and visibly brighter. Smooth skin capable of reflecting light will give your skin a youthful glow and a brilliant shine for that well-rested and refreshed look.

Moisturizes skin due to the capacity of the hyaluronic acid to absorb water, thereby increasing fluid between cells, giving your skin a smoother and younger appearance. This intense water absorption means no more dry, peeling or cracked skin, even in extreme weather.

The presence of Organic Rosehip Seed oil to support Vitamin C increases collagen production so your skin retains the elasticity responsible for a youthful appearance and prevents skin sagging associated with aging. Enjoy smooth and supple skin that takes years off your appearance.

Reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles with the help of our foundation 20 % Vitamin C. Special ingredients such us Hyaluronic Acid and Organic Sea Buckthorn oil work to plump up the skin, which reduces fine lines and wrinkles in the skin so it is smoother, clearer and younger.

Vitamin C: With a 20% concentration does more than boost the body’s immune system; it also provides many benefits to keep the skin tight, smooth and looking ageless. Vitamin C has been scientifically proven to reduces the effects of sun exposure on the skin, including sunburn, sun spots, redness and wrinkles.

In addition to helping reduce the signs of aging, Vitamin C is essential for everyday maintenance to strengthen and smooth out the skin, as well as neutralizing free radicals before they can damage the skin.

***Our additional Key Ingredients below were all selected for their ability to enhance and support Vitamin C’s effect on the skin.

Organic Rosehip Seed Oil & Organic Sea Buckthorn Oil – These oils promote skin hydration and lock in moisture to protect your skin from signs of aging and improve its beauty and youthfulness. Rosehip Oil specifically has been used in medical communities around the world for those with serious skin ailments and only recently has North America learned to embrace natural solutions from our ancestors. These two organic oils are full of antioxidants and therefore act as the perfect supporting cast for our best friend – Vitamin C

Resistem (Plant Stem Cells) – This provides the perfect mix of protection from stress-related aging and promotes skin detoxification. Resistem will help your skin regenerate faster while protecting it from environmental stressors.

Hyaluronic Acid (Botanical) – Holding up to 1000 times its weight in water and drawing moisture out of the environment and onto the surface of your skin ,there is not a more effective moisturizing agent on the market today. Penetrates deeply, and actives collagen production for a fresher, younger, firmer, and brighter complexion

Green Tea Extact– The catechins in green tea are a potent antioxidant which also contribute to the overall anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant benefits of this ancient health and beauty secret.

How I used it:

It’s a lighter serum so I used it in the morning after washing my face. The directions on the packaging said, “As natural ingredients may separate, shake lightly for 1-2 seconds before use.”  I followed those instructions. Serums are supposed to cover the skin lightly and absorb quickly so, I only needed to apply a small amount of it on my face.

What I thought:

It smells wonderful! It has such a great citrus smell that I truly enjoyed. It’s not overpowering and dissipates after it’s been absorbed. I had no issues with breakouts or dryness while using this product.

Did it even my skin tone? Well, yes, from what I can tell. I have some red patches around my nose that have gone away since I started using this product.

Where you can get it:

It can be purchased here.

Important Life Lessons From Elf On The Shelf

We just started Elf on the Shelf this year. I thought it’d be a fun tradition and that the kids would enjoy it. Well, they kind of enjoy it. Maybe. I can’t really tell. I think it freaks them out more than anything. I mean, there is an elf that is making mischief in their house, so it makes sense that they’d be a little wary about it. They named him Hans Mario Snowball.

I wanted to share some life lessons I’ve learned from Hans.

1- The things you think are funny as an adult aren’t as funny when you’re a child and vice versa.

2 – Always… ALWAYS check the date on the milk before you put green food coloring in it.

If you don’t… the milk will probably be bad. And it will ruin the fun of green milk. Also, if you have picky eaters, green milk will probably just ruin milk for them altogether.

3 – If you think your kid is going to love Elf on the Shelf, chances are, he won’t. He’ll tell you daily that he’s getting sick of that naughty elf and his shenanigans.

4 – YOU will probably enjoy Elf on the Shelf more than your child. You’ll spend all the time planning and laughing about how funny it’ll be and you littles will wake up and be mad that the elf has made yet another mess.

and lastly,

5 – If your elf makes a snow angel in flour, he’ll get gross and dirty and he’ll look smug about it. This will either make you laugh really hard in the morning or make you really mad, depending on the amount of coffee you’ve had and how early it is. Basically, coffee is the key to happiness. 😉

Geeky Confessions

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now and after the crazy weekend I had, I think it’s time for some geeky confessions.

I hate supernatural. I don’t understand the fandom. I don’t think any of them are cute.
 I. do. not. like. supernatural. – It makes me really, really mad when I’m on pinterest and BAM! Supernatural fandom is taking over.

I didn’t see Star Wars until I was 25 …. And that’s because my brother liked star wars and  I didn’t want to be like him. True freaking story. Sometimes, just sometimes, your brother might know what is up. (But most of the time, brothers are lame and don’t know things. bahaha. )

I’ve talked about this one before, but I have an abnormal obsession with The Lord of the Rings. I used to go into a chat room (REMEMBER THOSE?!) … Called The Barrow Downs (we called it “BD”) that was just a bunch of LotR nerds and spend hours and hours talking them. I’ve actually still stayed in contact with some of them and have met them IRL and they’re just as cool as I thought they’d be.

The day this came out, my dog died. I spent the entire movie crying and my friends thought it was because of Heath Ledger… and teased me about it… which made me MORE upset and made me cry MORE. While that was sad, I was definitely more upset about my dog dying. I still cannot watch this movie because it reminds me of that day.

Do you have any geeky confessions??
